Window on Work Values (WoWV) Profile

Understanding Work Values

Values are the core beliefs and concepts that guide behavior in the workplace. They influence decision-making and motivate people to uphold what they believe is important. Values shape how individuals view colleagues, behavior, and workplace events. When values clash or are misaligned, they often become sources of conflict and dissatisfaction.

What is the Window on Work Values Profile (WoWV)?

The WoWV Profile is based on responses to 64 carefully crafted questions where individuals rate work situations or activities they value most. The results reveal a hierarchy of eight core work value types that drive behavior:
  • Compliance
  • Conformity
  • Collectivism
  • Equality
  • Empowerment
  • Independence
  • Individualism
  • Authority

These values are arranged within the Window on Work Values Model — a structured framework depicting how these values relate and contrast with one another.

The WoWV Model Explained

Built over five years of research and testing, the WoWV model organises values into a visual "window" divided into four quadrants, each containing key value types:
Quadrant Core Value Type Description
Self Focus Individualism Personal goals prioritised over group needs
Group Focus Collectivism Group needs prioritised over individual goals
Organisational Constraint Compliance Adherence to rules and guidelines to ensure smooth operation
Organisational Freedom Empowerment Freedom to choose individual pathways without constraints
Additional value types fit into these quadrants based on the focus on self/group and freedom/constraint:
  • Independence: Self Focus + Organisational Freedom
  • Authority: Self Focus + Organisational Constraint
  • Equality: Group Focus + Organisational Freedom
  • Conformity: Group Focus + Organisational Constraint

Why Use the WoWV Profile?

  • Individual Insight: Understand your own work values and how they shape your workplace behavior and decisions.
  • Organisational Alignment: Gain a clear picture of your organisation’s values and how they align or differ from individual values.
  • Team Development: Facilitate open discussions about shared values to improve collaboration and reduce conflicts.
  • Team Charter Creation: Use shared values as a foundation to create team charters and action-based ground rules, improving teamwork and productivity.

How It Works

  • Individuals complete the 64-item WoWV questionnaire, generating a personalised hierarchy of work values.
  • Organisations can use the 32-item Organisational Values Profile multi-rater survey to capture perceived organisational values from multiple perspectives.
  • The results provide valuable comparisons between individual and organisational values, helping identify alignment or gaps.
