Many researchers and professionals believe that the complexity of the human psyche can be meaningfully understood through five distinct and insightful dimensions. Four of these are measured in the Team Management Profile. The fifth dimension—often explored in clinical psychology to assess aspects of mood and emotional variability—is addressed in a workplace context by the QO2.
The QO2 — or Opportunities-Obstacles Quotient — measures the extent to which individuals are naturally inclined to focus on opportunities versus obstacles. In simple terms, it reflects a person's inherent comfort with risk. This mindset influences how people approach decision-making, change, conflict, and a wide range of workplace situations. The tool offers a high level of face validity and practical utility for managers and their teams.
The Risk-Orientation Model underpins the QO2 concept and defines five subscales that combine to calculate an individual's QO2 score. The Opportunities-Obstacles Quotient Profile enables individuals to better understand their approach to work, improving how they seize opportunities and foresee obstacles. An overall score is provided alongside detailed insights into the five subscales.
The QO2 reveals whether people tend to recognise possibilities or default to caution — and how that shapes their workplace behavior. Rather than simply labeling individuals as optimists or pessimists, it highlights thinking patterns that influence risk tolerance, decision-making, and adaptability in everyday work situations.
